The Al-Anon Family Groups are a fellowship of relatives and friends of alcoholics who share their experience, strength, and hope, in order to solve their common problems. We believe alcoholism is a family illness, and that changed attitudes can aid recovery. Al-Anon is not allied with any sect, denomination, political entity, organization, or institution; does not engage in any controversy, neither endorses nor opposes any cause. There are no dues for membership. Al-Anon is self-supporting through its own voluntary contributions. Al-Anon has but one purpose: to help families of alcoholics. We do this by practicing the Twelve Steps, by welcoming and giving comfort to families of alcoholics, and by giving understanding and encouragement to the alcoholic.

One Day at a Time - September 9
Here's a eye-opening, mind-opening question to ask myself; What am I doing with what I've got? Instead of crying over what I don't have, and wishing my life were different, what am I doing with what I've got? Am I so sure I'm doing everything possible to make my life a success? Am I using my capabilities well? Do I recognize and appreciate all I have to be grateful for? Actually, I am the possessor of unlimited resources. The more I do with them, the more they will grow, to overshadow and cancel out the difficult and painful aspects that now get so much of my attention. Today's Reminder: Isn't my life full of potential good that I'm not using? Couldn't I bring it to fruition by changing my attitude? As a beginning, I will apply liberal amounts of gratitude for even my littlest advantage and pleasures. When I build on this precious foundation of present, tangible good, things will continue to change for the better. "God make me grateful for all the good things I have been taking for granted" |

Gratitude List Aren't Just for November
Courage to Change (page 264)
Trying to follow a suggestion I heard in Al-Anon meetings, I dutifully wrote lists of things for which I was grateful. I listed such things as my health, my job, and food on my table. When I finished, I didn't feel very grateful; my mind was weighted down with the negative thinking that had resulted from living with alcoholism. But I had made a gesture, and the seed of gratitude was planted.
I gradually learned to appreciate the small accomplishments of my daily life. Perhaps I was able to avoid a pointless argument by reciting the Serenity Prayer, or my sharing helped a newcomer, or I finished something I had been neglecting. I was beginning to change. I made a point of recognizing small changes and my self-esteem grew. The daily application of Al-Anon principles helped me to deepen my sense of gratitude and replace those nagging, negative thoughts. Eventually I was able to go back to my original list and be truly grateful for those things I had taken for granted.
Today's Reminder
I need to nurture myself with gratitude. Today I can practice appreciating myself, my world, and my Higher Power.

Al‑Anon’s slogans have developed through the years and have grown along with the fellowship. In the development of How Al‑Anon Works for Families & Friends of Alcoholics (B-32), a discussion regarding slogans resulted in concurrence that they evolve from common usage, not Conference action. While members have been known to use a wide variety of different sayings, they often differ greatly from region to region. They are not considered to be Al‑Anon slogans unless they are used throughout the entire fellowship, which often happens over time.
The indexes of current Conference Approved Literature list 16 Al‑Anon slogans. You can find all of them in the index of Many Voices, One Journey (B-31), which gives information on when each slogan first made its way into our literature.
